Letter from John Clayton
November 2008

You will most probably have read the letter on the Home Page from Chief Executive Paul Hardaker in which he explains the plans for redeveloping MetLink over the coming year. I would particularly draw your attention at the moment to the following part of Paul’s letter:

“You will be able to continue to input weather observations into MetLink for a while, but we envisage phasing out this feature over the coming year, as other resources become available on the MetLink site.  However, the observations and images that have already been submitted to MetLink will continue to be available to MetLink participants”.

What we hope is that regular participants WILL continue to input their daily weather observations until closure takes place. In this way the database will remain viable right up to its closure, from which time onwards it will form a permanent archive resource available on the website for future use by everyone. If participants decide to discontinue their input before the closure takes place it will reduce the viability of the record for the final months and also create a vacuum until the other resources to which Paul refers become available.

So please DO keep your observations coming in, remembering that they will continue to be of value to current users of the database and furthermore will contribute to the permanent archive which the data will form after closure.

Best regards,

John Clayton
